#26: Islamic Awareness 3 - Fatin Nabila's

First of all, I was quite anxious when I was admitted to this university. With thought that this university is an Islamic university, I assumed that everything will be restricted according to the rules in Islam. Not that I am rejecting the idea, I am just scared for myself who did not have any religious background except both my parents who had set up my upbringing living according to Islamic way of life. Being in IIUM has made me realize that it is one of the best gifts that Allah SWT has given to me. I felt blessed to be in this university as I came across with people who are so nice while studying here. The words of brotherhood and sisterhood really opens up my mind that even though we did not live in the same condition before we enrolled in IIUM, we are still brothers and sisters in Islam. We still can take care and respect each other. That is what touches me the most.Besides, it does give me a bigger perspective when looking back to my earlier days in IIUM.

In academic field, I really enjoy taking the IRK subjects because it has given me a broader space of knowledge where I can read from the Hadith and also the words in Holy Quran when looking for certain topics of discussion. Even in English courses they implement this. The way the lecturers give us the opportunity to discuss and compare between the Western ideologies that we have learned throughout the semester and the Islamic perspectives that would go align or oppose the ideologies. This experience has given me the ability to compare and contrast between two things that would ease my decision process when selecting which one is good or bad. I just feel lucky and it is such an honor for me to be in this university.

Spiritually, being in IIUM is like a reminder to us. There are times when you can appreciate the environment and feel it at the furthest of your heart that Allah’s creations are really amazing. It gives me ponder more and more and again it will lead me back to Allah SWT. Various kinds of events that were being organized by the students and administrations gave me the message that we should love Him and His Messenger more and more. Be it in academic or spiritual field, both must be balance and great maintenance need to be taken to preserve it well in our heart and mind.
